Cagliari
As we can see from its former name: Karalis or Karales, it became an important maritime and commercial town under the Carthaginian domination. Taken by the count Tiberio Gracco in 238 b. C., Cagliari went through a very prosperous period, and it became, at first, a municipality, and then seat of the bishop's palace.
Sassari
This area has been inhabited since the Neolitic age and it was quite populated during the Roman Conquest, when the colony of Turris Libisonis (Porto Torres) was at the height of its glory; but it is in I 131 that the name of Sassari is quoted for the first time in an official register.
Nuoro
Traditionally an agricultural and pastoral centre, the structure of Nuoro's economy has undergone modification over the last few decades. It is now based mainly on the service industries (public administration, commerce, banking) and the construction industry associated with urban development.
Oristano
It is situated in the western toast, nearby the island’s longest river: the Tirso. Founded by the people escaped from Tharros because of the barbarian raids, Oris-tano was the chieftown of the Giudicato di Arborea.
